This type of salt has long been used in European magical traditions, African diaspora traditions, and Hoodoo.
I commonly use black salt powder, also known as "sal negro" for protection, banishing, enemy works, and in some situations where salt alone would not be enough.
One may use various ingredients as a blackening agent for this particular curio, such as ground pepper, ritual bonfire ashes, black ink, and cast iron fillings. Charcoal is my favorite since, mundanely, it is used to absorb moisture and foul odor from the air at home; I believe it can absorb and remove bad vibes in one's property, too.

Southern folks are known to throw black salt mixed with sulfur, red pepper flakes, and ground black pepper behind unwanted guests or rude customers when leaving their place to keep them from returning. They also throw black salt made of ground black pepper and salt to prevent a sorcerer from getting back into one's home. This particular practice actually came from the Vai people of West Africa.
